Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is a 2000 platform action game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, originally released for the Nintendo 64. It features 2.5D visuals, letting players control Kirby across six unique planets, battle enemies and bosses, and collect 100 scattered crystal shards.
The game introduces a "Copy Ability Mix" system: Kirby can combine seven base abilities to create 28 new mixed powers, boosting gameplay variety and strategy. It also includes three minigames for up to four players, adding multiplayer fun.
The story is set on Ripple Star, home of the fairies, which is invaded by the evil Dark Matter seeking the planet's sacred Crystal. Fairy Ribbon flees with the Crystal, but it shatters and scatters across the galaxy. After crashing on Pop Star and meeting Kirby, she joins him on a quest to find all shards.
It sold ~1.07 million copies in Japan and ~540,000 in North America, earning a 77% Metacritic score and 32/40 from Japanese magazine Famitsu.
On May 20, 2022, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards joined the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, making this classic available on Switch.
