Altered Beast is a side-scrolling action game released by Sega in 1988. Set in ancient Greece, players take on the role of a centurion resurrected by Zeus, tasked with saving Zeus' daughter Athena from Neff, the ruler of the Underworld. The game features five levels, with basic attacks including punching, kicking, and jumping. At the end of each level, Neff appears in a different form to block the player's progress. By defeating specific enemies, players collect Spirit Balls; gathering three transforms the centurion into powerful beast forms like a werewolf, dragon, bear, or tiger, each with unique attacks and abilities. Originally launched in arcades, Altered Beast was later ported to multiple home consoles and computer platforms, including the NES, Mega Drive, and Master System. The NES version added new levels and transformations—for example, in an ocean level, players can turn into a shark to face new enemies and challenges. With its unique transformation system and mythological setting, Altered Beast became one of the standout action games of its era, beloved by players worldwide.
