Gauntlet II is an arcade game released by Atari Games in 1986, serving as the direct sequel to the 1985 title Gauntlet. It retains the top-down dungeon exploration style of its predecessor and supports up to four players in cooperative play.
In Gauntlet II, players can choose the same character class without being restricted to fixed class assignments; each player is distinguished by color, such as red wizard, blue elf, or green warrior. The game also adds various level designs, including maps rotated 90 degrees, and new enemy types like "It" — a foe that, upon touching a player, draws all enemies to attack that player. Players can remove this status by touching another player or reaching the exit.
New items and environmental elements are also introduced, such as special pickups that make bullets bounce off walls, acid pools that deal heavy damage, and large dragons that span multiple tiles and require multiple hits to defeat. Levels also feature hidden walls, magic walls (which turn into monsters or items when hit), stun tiles (which daze players), and fake exits, boosting the game’s challenge and fun.
Gauntlet II first launched on arcade platforms and was later ported to multiple home computer and console systems, including the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS, NES, and Game Boy. The NES version, released in Europe in 1989, supports up to four players simultaneously, making it one of the few games of its era with four-player on-screen gameplay.
The game received positive reviews upon release, regarded as a successful expansion of the original. Its varied level designs and new gameplay elements deliver a fresh experience for players, cementing the Gauntlet series’ standing in action-adventure gaming.
