Faxanadu is an action RPG for the Famicom (NES) released by Hudson Soft in Japan on November 16, 1987. Its name blends "Famicom" and "Xanadu", marking it as a spin-off of Falcom’s Dragon Slayer series’ second entry, Xanadu. This side-scrolling title combines action and RPG elements. Players take on the role of a nameless wanderer who returns to his hometown of Aolis, only to find it in ruins: the elves’ life-giving spring has been poisoned, and dwarves have turned into monsters attacking the land. The king tasks the hero with investigating and resolving this crisis. During the adventure, players explore various areas of the World Tree, including its roots, inner trunk, branches, and the dwarves’ mountain fortress. The protagonist can buy and equip weapons and armor, learn magic, and interact with town NPCs for information. Defeating enemies grants experience points and gold, used to level up and purchase items. The game uses a password system: players can get "spells" from a church mentor to save progress. The mentor also grants titles based on experience, which affect the amount of XP and gold carried over when resuming via password. Faxanadu received positive reviews upon release and is regarded as an underrated gem for the NES. In its 2011 review, IGN gave it an 8.5/10, calling it a hidden treasure.
