Family Mahjong II: Shanghai Road is a mahjong game developed by Nihon Bussan and published by Namco, released exclusively for the Nintendo Famicom in Japan on November 25, 1988. As a direct sequel to Family Mahjong, it adds a tournament mode with light RPG elements on top of traditional mahjong gameplay. After winning matches, players can boost specific stats to improve their odds in later tournaments. The game uses one-on-one mahjong battles, which are rare in real-life mahjong but common in computer adaptations, as a single AI opponent reduces game complexity. Nihon Bussan was known for its mahjong arcade games at the time.
