Exerion is a 1983 shooter game developed by Jaleco, first launched on arcades then ported to home consoles like MSX, SG-1000 and Nintendo Famicom. Known for its unique pseudo-3D perspective and inertia simulation, it lets players pilot a fighter jet with dual and single beam weapons to destroy incoming enemies. Players face bizarre alien creatures including mutated gene beasts, egg-throwing birds and pterosaurs while dodging attacks. Parallax scrolling backgrounds create depth and immersion for enhanced visuals. Its soundtrack, composed by Yoko Osawa, blends electronic and rock elements to match the fast-paced gameplay. A hit in Japan upon release, it became one of the top-selling arcade games of its era. Its success led Jaleco to release the sequel Exerion II: Zorni in 1984, followed by the arcade follow-up Exerizer in 1987—released as Sky Fox in North America. In recent years, Exerion has been included in multiple retro game compilations, such as the 2003 PlayStation title Jaleco Collection Vol. 1 and the Game Boy Advance release JaJaMaru Jr. Denshoki Jaleco Memorial. The original arcade version was re-released on PlayStation 4 via the Arcade Archives series in 2014, launching in North America in 2015. In 2023, City Connection and Happy Meal co-released the latest series entry Final Exerion, delivering a brand-new gaming experience.
