Electroplankton is an interactive music game designed by Japanese artist Toshio Iwai and released by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS in 2005. Set in a vast underwater world, it lets players interact with 10 unique electroplankton via the touchscreen and microphone to create original music. It features two modes: Performance and Audience. In Performance mode, players use the stylus, touchscreen, and microphone to compose music in real time. Audience mode lets players sit back and enjoy the plankton’s automatic musical performances. Each plankton has a distinct sound and interaction style. For example, Hanenbow produces different tones based on the angle and force of a player’s touch, while Rec-Rec records ambient sounds and loops them. Notably, the game has no save function—players cannot store their musical creations directly. However, they can record their performances by connecting the Nintendo DS to an external recording device. With its innovative interaction and one-of-a-kind musical experience, Electroplankton breaks traditional game boundaries, offering players unprecedented creative freedom and fun.
